Show some love for 'Neutral' in Interior Design

Why do neutrals have a bad reputation?

So many of us feel the need to make huge statements in our interiors over using a ‘boring’ neutral. I read so much about using a hero colour in a room, a feature wallpaper on one wall, a wacky scheme with birds all over the upholstery.

Don’t get me wrong I do like a hero colour (I tend to paint the entire room in it so it's not the hero) and I certainly love a wallpaper (also decorate the entire room in it) and the injection of colours and prints, but I tend to do this using textured upholstery, cushions and lamps. My inspiration comes from nature and the natural world...

Why are people so scared of just choosing a neutral? Neutrals are my absolute hero and it’s always where we start when designing an interior.

Personally I think @Dulux hit the nail on the head when their colour experts chose Brave Ground as their 2021 colour of the year! A bolstering shade that connects back to nature and the simple things. A warm, earthy tone, it creates a feeling of stability, growth and potential; and provides a firm foundation for change and creativity in your home.

One of my favourite colours is taupe, it is an easy neutral which is described as a grey brown colour. It doesn’t really sit in the brown or the grey family which makes it a really good base colour to pair up with warm colours like pink and aubergine or cooler colours like grey and blue. Designer @kellyhoppen is really well known for her use taupe, she is my hero!
