What is a Trend?

During my time at University I was always intrigued by trends and what ignites them, our reading lists always included these thought provoking books. We’ve all heard of Malcolm Gladwell right?

A trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. This can be macro or micro and include societal, technological and political movements, to name a few. Trends are inevitable in this ever changing world, they often happen on their own driven by many things. For example in my industry climate change and technology has created some amazing movements in the production of materials - trend here to stay!

Trend as a word is often over used and confused - in the world of fashion and interiors it gets a bad reputation - throwaway, fast fashion society. However it’s not all bad! Looking at trend as a general direction, taking us from decade to decade, some, not all of them making their imprint on history and culture from retail, hospitality, art, interiors, architecture, the list is endless. My philosophy is always ‘built to last’ and I don’t follow fashion trends especially now we are always thinking of how to buy less and more sustainably.

But it is hard to ignore some of the obvious movements I see coming through and I believe all of these are trends to invest in. A few things that are back into interiors right now; Lots of Lacquer - not the cheap storage units more sophisticated shine in the form of side tables richly coloured with beautiful design detail. These pieces will last forever!

Interesting Walls, my Dad used to rag roll and I loved it, it adds depth and texture which can be more subtle than wallpaper and when using eco paint is much better for the environment. The 80s is back - think English country house prints but not full on chintz - I’m almost sure your Grandma can pass hers on to you! Hipstoric Home - blending antique and vintage pieces with contemporary style, something interior designers have been doing for a while, and my favourite!
